Buccaneers @ Bengals — The Catch-Up

The loudest number on the board is Tee Higgins to score a touchdown at +132. He scored in 9 of 15 games last year.

You have not watched a football game since February. Since then Cincinnati kept the coach who went 6-11, kept the quarterback who played eight games, and let the pass rusher who used to make the defense work leave for Baltimore. Tampa Bay lost Mike Evans to San Francisco after twelve seasons, lost its goal-line back to Washington, and hired Cincinnati's old backup quarterback to hold Baker Mayfield's clipboard. The sportsbooks set the total at 50.5, the highest of the sixteen openers, and made the Bengals a 3.5-point favorite at home. Both teams' openers last year landed on 43 and 33.

The loudest number on the board is Tee Higgins to score a touchdown at +132. He scored in 9 of 15 games last year. The second-loudest is Cade Otton Over 3.5 receptions at +140: he cleared it in 8 of 15, against a defense that allowed more receiving yards to tight ends than any team in football.

Sunday, Sept 13 · 1:00 PM ET · Paycor Stadium, Cincinnati · outdoors, turf, light drizzle forecast

Bengals −3.5 · Total 50.5 · Buccaneers +170 / Bengals −205

Todd Bowles (fifth season) vs. Zac Taylor (eighth) · no meeting in the last three seasons

Part 1 · What you missed

Cincinnati Bengals. Six and eleven. Joe Burrow, 29, $55 million a year, played Weeks 1 and 2, missed the next ten, and came back for the last six: 270 yards a game, 15 touchdowns, 5 interceptions in those. Joe Flacco, 41, played seven games in between and is the backup again; Jake Browning, who started four, is a Buccaneer. Trey Hendrickson is a Raven. Joseph Ossai (5 sacks) is a Jet, Logan Wilson a Cowboy, Geno Stone a Bill, Noah Fant a Saint. In: Jonathan Allen (Minnesota) inside, Boye Mafe on the edge, Kyle Dugger (Pittsburgh) and Bryan Cook (Kansas City) at safety, Cashius Howell (41st pick) and Tacario Davis (72nd). Shemar Stewart, last year's 17th pick, is a backup on the depth chart. Still here: Ja'Marr Chase ($40.3 million a year, 125 catches, 1,412 yards), Tee Higgins ($28.8 million, 846 yards, 11 touchdowns in 15 games), Chase Brown (1,019 rushing yards), Mike Gesicki, Andrei Iosivas, Samaje Perine at 30.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Eight and nine, a game out of the playoffs. Mike Evans, 33, is a 49er after eight games and 368 yards in a season that ended on injured reserve. Rachaad White is in Washington; Kenny Gainwell came from Pittsburgh at $7 million a year (557 rushing yards, 512 receiving, 8 touchdowns). Chris Godwin, 30, played nine games coming back from the ankle. Emeka Egbuka, the 19th pick in 2025, led the team with 127 targets and 938 yards. Jalen McMillan played four games. Bucky Irving played ten. Cade Otton was paid $10 million a year. Baker Mayfield, 31, in the last year of his deal: 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, all 17 games. The defense added Al-Quadin Muhammad (11 sacks in Detroit), Alex Anzalone (Detroit), Christian Rozeboom (128 tackles in Carolina), A'Shawn Robinson, and drafted Rueben Bain 15th and Josiah Trotter 46th. Jamel Dean is a Steeler. Lavonte David is 36 and still starting.

One sentence: Cincinnati's stars are back and its pass rush left; Tampa's defense got a real edge rusher and its offense lost the receiver it was built around for twelve years.

Part 2 · The line, translated

Bengals −3.5. The books think Cincinnati is three and a half points better at home. Bet the Bengals and they win by 4 or more; bet the Buccaneers and a 3-point loss pays. Home field is worth about 2.5, so on a neutral field this is a one-point game between an 8-9 team and a 6-11 team. The whole spread is the market betting that Burrow's eight games were the real Bengals.

Total 50.5. Add both final scores. It works out to roughly Bengals 27, Buccaneers 23.5. It is the highest total of the sixteen openers, and it is a bet on two defenses: Cincinnati's was 28th in efficiency, Tampa's 22nd. Both offenses opened last year in normal weather and scored 17 and 23.

+170 / −205. Straight-up winner. Risk $100 to win $170 on Tampa; risk $205 to win $100 on Cincinnati. The books make the Bengals about a 66% chance.

Player props read the same way. "Tee Higgins anytime touchdown, +132" means risk $100 to win $132 that he scores, and the book thinks that happens about 43% of the time. He scored in 60% of his games. Hold that for Part 5 next to this: at DraftKings, Week 1 receiver touchdown Overs cashed 21% and 14% the last two Septembers against a 19% base. Every touchdown price in this piece has to clear that bar. Most do not.

Part 3 · Three words you need Sunday

Blitz rate. How often the defense sends five or more rushers. Tampa sent extra rushers on 37.6% of dropbacks last year, third-most in football. Cincinnati sent them on 21.1%, the least. Joe Burrow against the blitz last year: +0.24 expected points a play, 62% completions, seven touchdowns in 69 tries. Baker Mayfield against it: −0.25, 49% completions. Sunday the blitz-heaviest coach in the game faces the quarterback who punishes it, and the blitz-lightest defense faces the quarterback who hates it and will not have to.

Funnel. Where a defense sends the ball. Cincinnati allowed the fewest receptions to wide receivers in football (6.6 a game) and the most receiving yards to tight ends (68.1) and the most rushing yards to running backs (107.1). Tampa allowed the most receiving yards to running backs (44.2). Neither defense stops the pass. Both decide who catches it.

Goal-line back. The running back who gets the carries inside the 5. In Tampa it was Sean Tucker: 11 carries, 4 touchdowns, on 6 to 16% of the snaps. Bucky Irving had zero carries inside the 5 all season. Rachaad White had 9 and he is gone. The touchdown prices on this board are set as if Irving is the back. The carries say Tucker.

Part 4 · The whiteboards

Cincinnati's defense did not blitz, did not stop the run, and let tight ends run free. Receipt: +0.18 allowed per dropback, 28th; pressure 29.8%, 18th; sack rate 5.7%, 24th; blitz 21.1%, 32nd; run defense 26th by efficiency and last by yards to backs (107.1 a game). By yards, 233.7 passing allowed (10th-most), 101.9 to receivers (third-fewest), 68.1 to tight ends (most), 32.4 receiving to backs (fifth-most). By how far the ball flew, all 17 games:

Behind the line · Throws: 103 · Caught: 86% · TDs: 6 · Worth to offense: +0.18

0 to 9 yards · Throws: 256 · Caught: 70% · TDs: 15 · Worth to offense: +0.25

10 to 19 yards · Throws: 118 · Caught: 51% · TDs: 8 · Worth to offense: +0.44

20 or more · Throws: 57 · Caught: 33% · TDs: 4 · Worth to offense: +0.35

Tight ends at 0 to 9: 97 throws, 748 yards, 9 touchdowns, +0.44 each. Tight ends at 10 to 19: 33 throws, 4 touchdowns, +0.48. Tight ends past 20: 17 throws, +0.87. Receivers at 0 to 9: 97 throws, 2 touchdowns, +0.10, which is a good cell. Receivers at 10 to 19 (+0.58 on 74 throws) is the one receiver leak. The shells were Cover 3 (187 snaps, +0.10), Cover 1 (141, +0.03) and Cover 2 (115, +0.19). Tampa's offense against Cover 2 last year: +0.16. Against Cover 1: −0.17.

Tampa's defense pressured everyone and finished nothing. Receipt: 34.5% pressure, second in football; 37.6% blitz, third; 5.75% sack rate, 23rd; +0.08 per dropback, 20th; run defense fourth (−0.12 a rush, 74.3 yards a game to backs). By yards, 242.9 passing allowed (sixth-most), 118.2 to receivers (20th), 52.5 to tight ends (ninth-most), 44.2 receiving to backs, the most in football.

Behind the line · Throws: 83 · Caught: 80% · TDs: 4 · Worth to offense: −0.03

0 to 9 yards · Throws: 300 · Caught: 76% · TDs: 14 · Worth to offense: +0.15

10 to 19 yards · Throws: 124 · Caught: 56% · TDs: 7 · Worth to offense: +0.43

20 or more · Throws: 61 · Caught: 26% · TDs: 5 · Worth to offense: +0.22

Three hundred short throws faced, the most in the game, because the blitz makes quarterbacks get rid of it. Backs behind the line: 38 throws, 413 yards, +0.62 each, the checkdown that beats the blitz. Tight ends at 10 to 19: 25 throws, 3 touchdowns, +0.89. Receivers at 0 to 9: 155 throws, +0.07, a good cell; receivers at 10 to 19, +0.33; receivers past 20, 54 throws, 5 touchdowns, 28% caught. And the tell: Cover 0, the all-out blitz with nobody deep, on 31 snaps at +0.51 to the offense. Muhammad's 11 sacks were signed to turn the pressure into sacks. He got them lined up across from Aidan Hutchinson.

The trench math. Both lines were average: Tampa allowed pressure at the 23rd-highest rate, Cincinnati the 16th, sack rates 20th and 23rd. Cincinnati's pass rush without Hendrickson and Ossai is Myles Murphy (5.5), B.J. Hill (4), Allen, Mafe and two rookies, against a Tampa line that keeps Mayfield clean when it is four rushers. Tampa's pass rush is Diaby (7), Vea (4.5), Muhammad and Bowles's extra man, against Burrow, who turns the extra man into a first down.

Part 5 · The prop board

Nine cards. "Last year" is the 2025 regular season; neither team played in January. Burrow's log is eight games, and two of them are the ones he was hurt in. Every line is Tuesday evening's, thirteen books, quoted with the book.

Joe Burrow · QB · Bengals

Who: 29, $55 million a year, eight games last year, and a 41-year-old behind him.

What he does: Quick (2.80 seconds), accurate (2.0 points above expected), throws to the sticks (−0.74, 18th), and eats the blitz: +0.24 a play, 62% completions, 7 touchdowns, 2 interceptions on 69 blitzed dropbacks.

Last year (six healthy games, Weeks 13 to 18): 270.0 passing yards, median 272.5 (261, 284, 225, 309, 305, 236). Over 267.5 in 3 of 6. Two or more touchdown passes in 5 of 6 (2, 4, 0, 4, 2, 3); three or more in 3 of 6. Threw an interception in 3 of 6. Twenty-five or more completions in 4 of 6. Longest completion over 37.5 in 2 of 6. Rushing yards under 6.5 in 5 of 6.

The book says: 267.5 passing yards (265.5 to 269.5). Over 1.5 touchdowns −137; Over 2.5 +195 at Hard Rock. Over 0.5 interceptions +125 at ESPN Bet. 24.5 completions. 34.5 attempts. Longest completion 37.5 (Under −120 at Fliff). 6.5 rushing yards (Under −104 at DraftKings).

The read: Over 2.5 passing touchdowns at +195, small. Half of his healthy games at a 34% price, against a defense that blitzed 37.6% and played Cover 0 on 31 snaps, from the quarterback who was the best in football against it. The Week 1 bar (22% and 29% on quarterback touchdown Overs) is the counter and it is a real one; the +195 is what makes it survive. The yards at 267.5 are his median; pass. Under 6.5 rushing yards at −104 is the quiet one: 5 of 6 healthy games and 6 of 8 overall, from a quarterback who ran 13 times in six games.

Ja'Marr Chase · WR · Bengals

Who: 26, $40.3 million a year, 185 targets, and the most yards after the catch above expected of any receiver on this slate.

What he does: 8.4-yard routes, 3.1 yards of separation, +1.32 yards after the catch above expected, 34.1% of the team's air yards. A short-band receiver who turns 8 into 20.

Last year (16 games): 88.2 yards, median 95. Over 86.5 in 10 of 16. In Burrow's six healthy games: 110, 44, 132, 109, 60, 96 (4 of 6). Eight or more catches in 7 of 16. Scored in 6 of 16; 22 red-zone targets, 7 touchdowns. Longest catch over 25.5 in 6 of 16.

The book says: 86.5 receiving yards (85.5 to 87.5). Over 7.5 receptions +116 at FanDuel. Anytime TD −120 at BetMGM. Longest reception 25.5 (Under −120 at Fliff; 24.5 at one book). Alternate 99.5 yards +148, 119.5 +290.

The read: Fade the touchdown at −120. He scored in 38% of his games and the price says 55%. That is the largest gap against a star on this board, and the mechanism is in the whiteboard: Tampa's short-band cell to receivers was its best (+0.07 on 155 throws), and Chase's game is the short band. Under 25.5 longest reception at −120 is the same thought: 10 of 16 under, against a defense that allowed 28% completions on deep throws. The yards at 86.5 (10 of 16, and his median is 95) are the Over if you want one, and a coin against the receiver bar (49% both Septembers).

Tee Higgins · WR · Bengals

Who: 27, $28.8 million a year, 846 yards and 11 touchdowns in 15 games, and the most efficient touchdown scorer per target on the slate.

What he does: 13.5-yard routes, 1.9 yards of separation (he catches it covered), 60% catch rate, 29% of the air yards. Eleven touchdowns on 98 targets; only four of them from inside the 20.

Last year (15 games): Scored in 9 of 15. In Burrow's healthy games he played: 3 of 4. 56.4 yards, median 56; under 59.5 in 9 of 15. Four or fewer catches in 9 of 15. Longest catch over 23.5 in 8 of 15.

The book says: Anytime TD +132 at Bally (+123 average). 60.5 receiving yards (59.5 to 64.5; Under 59.5 −105 at ESPN Bet). Under 4.5 receptions +116 at DraftKings. Longest reception 23.5. Alternate 79.5 yards +188, 99.5 +390.

The read: Anytime TD at +132, and Under 4.5 receptions at +116. The touchdown is 60% at a 43% price, into a defense that allowed 5 touchdowns on 54 deep receiver throws and left nobody deep on 31 snaps; the receiver-touchdown bar takes ten points of that and leaves seven. The receptions Under is 60% at a 46% price, and it is the same player: he scores on three catches, not seven. Under 59.5 yards at −105 is the third piece (9 of 15) and the weakest, because the deep band against Tampa is where his yards come from when they come. Take the first two.

Chase Brown · RB · Bengals

Who: 26, 1,019 rushing yards, 6 touchdowns, and the outlet for a quarterback who gets blitzed.

What he does: 13.6 carries, 0.35 yards over expected a carry, 4.1 catches a game, 13 goal-line carries with 4 touchdowns. Scored Cincinnati's first touchdown three times, the most on the team.

Last year: 59.9 rushing yards, median 53; over 58.5 in 8 of 17. Rushing plus receiving 85.6, median 90; over 86.5 in 10 of 17, and 5 of 6 with Burrow healthy (113, 35, 90, 109, 141, 90). Four or more catches in 8 of 17; with Burrow, 4 of 6. Over 23.5 receiving yards in 8 of 17; with Burrow, 4 of 6. Scored in 6 of 17, four of them in the last five.

The book says: 58.5 rushing yards (57.5 at one book). 86.5 rushing plus receiving (Over −110 at ESPN Bet). Over 3.5 receptions −108 at FanDuel. 23.5 receiving yards. 14.5 carries. Anytime TD −125 at DraftKings.

The read: Over 86.5 rushing plus receiving at −110. Ten of seventeen, five of six with his quarterback, against a defense that allowed the most receiving yards to backs in football (+0.62 a throw behind the line) and blitzes at a rate that makes the checkdown the play. The rushing yards alone are a coin into the fourth-best run defense; the receiving is the edge, so bet the number that includes it. Fade the touchdown at −125. Six of seventeen at a 56% price; the last five games (4 scores) built the line, and this database says a running back touchdown price built on the last five games is the thing to sell in Week 1.

Mike Gesicki and Andrei Iosivas · Bengals

Who: Gesicki, 30, $8.5 million, 12 games, 23 to 57% of the snaps. Iosivas, 26, the third receiver, and with Noah Fant gone, the fourth target.

Last year: Gesicki: 25.6 yards, median 16.5; under 20.5 in 8 of 12; two or fewer catches in 8 of 12; scored in 2 of 12. Iosivas: 29.0 yards, median 21; over 9.5 in 12 of 15; two or more catches in 8 of 15; scored in 2 of 15.

The book says: Gesicki 20.5 receiving yards (Under −110 at ESPN Bet); Under 2.5 receptions −154; anytime +320. Iosivas 9.5 receiving yards at three books (Over −125 at Fliff; 10.5 at some); anytime +325 at Fanatics.

The read: Over Iosivas 9.5 receiving yards at −125, where you can find it. Eighty percent at a 56% price. It is posted at three books and the line is the tell: the market has him as an afterthought and he was the fourth target on a team that throws 66% of the time. Under Gesicki 20.5 at −110 is 67% by the log, and the matchup argues (Tampa allowed +0.89 a throw to tight ends at 10 to 19). Take the log, small. Both touchdown prices are fades: 13% and 17% scorers at 24% prices.

Baker Mayfield · QB · Buccaneers

Who: 31, the last year of his contract, 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns, and a receiving corps that lost its best player of twelve years.

What he does: 2.85 seconds, 8.1-yard average depth, 12.7% of throws past 20, a scrambler (22.5 rushing yards a game). With four rushers: +0.12 a play, 23 touchdowns. Blitzed: −0.25, 49% completions. Cincinnati blitzes less than anyone.

Last year: 217.2 passing yards, median 215. Under 230.5 in 11 of 17. Last five 218.6. Two or more touchdowns in 8 of 17. Threw an interception in 9 of 17, and in 8 of the last 9. Twenty or fewer completions in 11 of 17. Longest completion under 35.5 in 11 of 17. Rushing over 14.5 yards in 11 of 17; last five 27.8. Four or more carries in 9 of 17.

The book says: 234.5 passing yards (230.5 at DraftKings, Under −111). Over 1.5 touchdowns −105 at ESPN Bet. Over 0.5 interceptions +105 at ESPN Bet. 20.5 completions (Under −109 at BetParx). Longest completion 35.5 (Under −115 at Hard Rock). 14.5 rushing yards at DraftKings (15.5 to 16.5 elsewhere). 3.5 rushing attempts.

The read: Under 230.5 passing yards at −111 (DraftKings), and Under 20.5 completions at −109. Both 11 of 17 at prices near 52%, from a quarterback whose median is 215, without Evans, against a defense that allowed the fewest receiver catches in football. The counter is the number 50.5 and Cincinnati's 28th-ranked pass defense; the answer is that Cincinnati's pass defense leaked to tight ends and backs, which is yards for Otton and Gainwell and not completions for Mayfield past 20. Over 14.5 rushing yards at DraftKings (about −115) is the third: 11 of 17, from a quarterback who scrambles against four-man rushes, against the defense that rushes four the most. The interception at +105 (53% of games, 49% implied) is small and real. The touchdowns at −105 are a coin.

Bucky Irving, Kenny Gainwell and Sean Tucker · RB · Buccaneers

Who: Irving, 24, the lead back, ten games, 588 yards. Gainwell, 27, from Pittsburgh at $7 million a year to replace Rachaad White's 132 carries and 40 catches. Tucker, 24, the goal-line back nobody prices.

What they do: Irving: 17.3 carries a game, 4.4 a carry, and −0.84 yards over expected a carry, the worst on the slate. Zero carries inside the 5. Gainwell: 0.55 over expected, 31.6% stacked boxes, 4.4 catches a game in Pittsburgh. Tucker: 11 carries inside the 5, 4 touchdowns, on 6 to 16% of the snaps in December.

Last year: Irving (10 games): 58.8 rushing yards, median 62; over 58.5 in 7 of 10; 15 or more carries in 8 of 10; scored in 4 of 10; last five 1.8 catches. Gainwell (16 games, Pittsburgh): 4.4 catches, median 4.5; over 3.5 in 9 of 16; 30.1 receiving yards, over 20.5 in 9 of 16; scored in 6 of 17. Tucker: scored in 6 of 17.

The book says: Irving 58.5 rushing yards (55.5 to 59.5), 14.5 carries (Over −105 at ESPN Bet), 1.5 receptions, anytime +160 at Fanatics. Gainwell 20.5 receiving yards, Over 3.5 receptions +132 at BetParx, 21.5 rushing yards, anytime +250 at FanDuel. Tucker: anytime +425 at Hard Rock, and no rushing line at any book.

The read: Over Irving 14.5 carries at −105. Eight of ten at a 51% price, against the defense that allowed the most rushing yards to backs in football. Carries, not yards, because his yards over expected say the yards come from volume and the volume is the bet. The counter is Gainwell, and it is why this is carries at 14.5 and not attempts at 17.5. Sean Tucker anytime at +425, small. Thirty-five percent of his games at a 19% price, with the goal-line carries and no yardage line, which is the blackout pattern this database has learned to trust. Gainwell Over 3.5 receptions at +132 is a 56% Pittsburgh log at a 43% price, with a new team attached; small. Irving's touchdown at +160 (40% of games, 38% implied) is fair and it is wrong: zero goal-line carries.

Emeka Egbuka and Chris Godwin · WR · Buccaneers

Who: Egbuka, 23, the 19th pick in 2025, 127 targets, 938 yards, and the coldest finish on the slate. Godwin, 30, $22 million a year, nine games back from the ankle.

What they do: Egbuka runs 12.2-yard routes, 2.6 yards of separation, catches 49.6% of his targets, and carried 35.5% of Tampa's air yards. Godwin runs 7.7-yard routes and gains 2.25 yards after the catch above expected, the best number on either team.

Last year: Egbuka (16 games): 55.0 yards, median 40; under 53.5 in 10 of 16; last five 29.4 (15, 64, 40, 20, 8); 15 red-zone targets, 2 touchdowns; scored in 5 of 17, none in the last eight; longest catch over 20.5 in 11 of 17. Godwin (9 games): 40.0 yards, median 26; under 41.5 in 6 of 9; 5 or more catches in 4 of 9.

The book says: Egbuka 53.5 receiving yards (52.5 to 55.5; Under −112 at BetParx); Over 4.5 receptions +130; anytime +190 at Bally; longest reception 20.5 (Over −125 at Fliff). Godwin 41.5 receiving yards (Under −111 at DraftKings); 3.5 receptions; anytime +240.

The read: Under Egbuka 53.5 receiving yards at −112. Ten of sixteen at a 53% price, against the defense that allowed the fewest receiver catches in football. The counter is Evans's 62 targets with nowhere to go, and the counter to that is a 49.6% catch rate: more targets to Egbuka is more incompletions, not more yards. The touchdown at +190 is a fade (2 scores on 15 red-zone targets, none in eight games). Godwin is a pass: nine games, a line at his average, a role that grew when Evans left, and a database rule that says do not price a comeback year as the player.

Cade Otton · TE · Buccaneers

Who: 27, paid $10 million a year, 81 targets, 572 yards, one touchdown, and the best matchup on the board.

What he does: 4.9-yard routes, 3.5 yards of separation, 73% catch rate, +0.78 yards after the catch above expected. The quick out when the blitz comes, except Cincinnati does not blitz, so he is the quick out when nothing is open.

Last year (15 games): 38.1 yards, median 28. Over 28.5 in 7 of 15. Four or more catches in 8 of 15. Scored in 1 of 15. Longest catch over 14.5 in 7 of 14.

The book says: 28.5 receiving yards (28.5 to 29.5). Over 3.5 receptions +140 at BetParx (some books post 3.0). Anytime TD +360 at BetRivers. Longest reception 14.5. Alternate 39.5 yards +182, 49.5 +325.

The read: Over 3.5 receptions at +140. Fifty-three percent at a 42% price, and the whiteboard is the argument: Cincinnati allowed 68.1 yards a game to tight ends (the most in football), 4.9 catches a game to them (fifth-most), and 9 touchdowns on 97 short throws to them at +0.44 each. Otton's route depth is 4.9 yards. He is the receiver Cincinnati's funnel points at. The Week 1 tight-end bar (34% on receptions) is the counter, and the reason this is +140 and not a lock. The yards at 28.5 are a coin at his median; the 49.5 rung at +325 is the ladder (5 of 15, 33% at 24%). The touchdown at +360: one in fifteen, pass, even against nine.

Part 6 · Between the lines

Bowles's blitz meets the quarterback who wants it. Tampa sent five or more on 37.6% of dropbacks, third-most in football, and got the second-most pressure and the 23rd-most sacks. Burrow against the blitz: +0.24 a play, seven touchdowns in 69 tries, the best number of any quarterback on the slate. The Bengals' answer to the blitz is Chase Brown behind the line (Tampa allowed +0.62 a throw there) and Higgins over the top of Cover 0 (+0.51 a snap). Those are two of the plays below. Muhammad's 11 sacks are the counter, and they came opposite Hutchinson.

Cincinnati's defense is a funnel and Tampa's roster fits it. Fewest receiver catches allowed, most tight-end yards, most running-back rushing yards. Tampa's receivers are a rookie with a 49.6% catch rate and a 30-year-old coming off an ankle. Tampa's tight end catches 73% of his targets. Tampa's lead back gets 17 carries. The funnel says Otton and Irving's volume, and the receiver Unders.

The goal-line back has no yardage line. Sean Tucker took 11 carries inside the 5 and scored 4 times while Bucky Irving took none. White, who took 9, is gone. The books post Tucker at +425 to score and nothing else. Irving is +160. The carries say the prices are backwards.

The Bengals' pass rush is a rebuild the market has not priced into Mayfield. Hendrickson (Baltimore) and Ossai (Jets) took 9 of the team's sacks with them. What is left: Murphy, Hill, Allen, Mafe, Stewart and a second-round rookie. Cincinnati blitzed 21.1%, least in football, and Mayfield with four rushers was +0.12 a play with 23 touchdowns. That is the Over case for the game, and it runs into a Tampa receiving corps that cannot catch it.

Burrow's line is built on six games. Everything on his card is a six-game sample, and two of the eight games in his log are the injury games. The market priced him as the 2024 Burrow (4,918 yards). The healthy six say 270 and 2.5 touchdowns; the market says 267.5 and 1.5 at −137. The touchdowns are where the gap is.

The opening-week bar, in one table. DraftKings Over props, settled, both seasons:

QB passing TDs · 2024: 22% · 2025: 29%

QB passing yards · 2024: 33% · 2025: 42%

RB rushing yards · 2025: 27%

TE receiving yards · 2024: 31% · 2025: 41%

WR receiving yards · 2024: 49% · 2025: 49%

The Burrow touchdown Over is the one quarterback Over in this piece, and it is at +195 because the bar says most of them lose. There are no running back yardage Overs. Irving is carries.

Part 7 · How Sunday probably goes

Cincinnati's plan: Burrow at 2.8 seconds, Chase on the short crosser against Tampa's zone, Brown as the blitz answer, Higgins on the one play a quarter when Bowles sends everybody. Tampa's plan: Irving into the worst run defense in football by yards, Otton on the quick out, and Mayfield holding the ball against four rushers because Cincinnati does not send five.

First quarter, Tampa scores first. Irving runs for 41 on the opening drive, Otton catches three, Mayfield scrambles for 12 on third down and Gainwell scores from the 2. Cincinnati answers with a 12-play drive: Chase twice underneath, Brown on a screen for 19 against a six-man rush, Brown from the 4.

Second quarter, the blitz costs Tampa. Bowles sends Cover 0 on second-and-8 and Burrow throws it over the top to Higgins for 44 and a touchdown. Mayfield throws late against a four-man rush and Dugger picks it. McPherson kicks. 17-7 at the half.

Second half, Tampa runs and Cincinnati bends. Irving reaches 20 carries by the middle of the third; Otton catches his fifth; Tucker scores from the 1 on fourth down. Burrow finds Gesicki for 22 against Cover 3 and Brown scores again. Egbuka drops a 30-yard ball on the sideline. Mayfield's last drive ends on a Vea-forced fumble at midfield.

Bengals 27, Buccaneers 20. Total 47, three and a half under the number. Burrow: 271 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception. Mayfield: 19 completions, 212 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception, 26 rushing yards. Higgins: 3 catches, 71 yards, a touchdown. Chase: 8 catches, 84 yards, longest 22. Brown: 14 carries, 61 yards, 5 catches, 39 yards, 2 touchdowns. Irving: 21 carries, 88 yards. Otton: 5 catches, 41 yards. Tucker: 3 carries, a touchdown.

Part 8 · The plays

Each one: the plain reason, then the receipt.

Tee Higgins anytime TD (+132, Bally). A 60% scorer at a 43% price against the defense that leaves nobody deep 31 times a year. Receipt: 9 of 15; 3 of 4 with Burrow; Tampa allowed 5 touchdowns on 54 deep throws to receivers and +0.51 a snap in Cover 0.

Over Cade Otton 3.5 receptions (+140, BetParx). The short-out tight end against the defense that allowed the most tight-end yards in football. Receipt: 8 of 15; Cincinnati allowed 68.1 yards and 4.9 catches a game to tight ends, 9 touchdowns on short throws to them.

Over Chase Brown 86.5 rushing plus receiving (−110, ESPN Bet). The blitz answer against the defense that allowed the most receiving yards to backs. Receipt: 10 of 17; 5 of 6 with Burrow; Tampa +0.62 a throw to backs behind the line.

Under Baker Mayfield 230.5 passing yards (−111, DraftKings). A 215-median quarterback without Evans, against the defense that allowed the fewest receiver catches. Receipt: 11 of 17; Cincinnati 6.6 receiver catches allowed a game, 32nd.

Under Baker Mayfield 20.5 completions (−109, BetParx). Receipt: 11 of 17; median 18.

Under Tee Higgins 4.5 receptions (+116, DraftKings). He scores on three catches. Receipt: 9 of 15; 1.9 yards of separation, 60% catch rate.

Over Bucky Irving 14.5 carries (−105, ESPN Bet). Volume into the worst run defense by yards. Receipt: 8 of 10; Cincinnati 107.1 rushing yards a game to backs, most in football.

Under Emeka Egbuka 53.5 receiving yards (−112, BetParx). Receipt: 10 of 16; median 40; 49.6% catch rate against the fewest receiver catches allowed.

Over Baker Mayfield 14.5 rushing yards (about −115, DraftKings). Receipt: 11 of 17; Cincinnati rushes four more than anyone and he scrambles against four.

Small: Joe Burrow Over 2.5 passing touchdowns (+195, Hard Rock), 3 of 6 healthy and the best blitz-beater against the third-heaviest blitz; the Week 1 quarterback bar is the reason it is small. Sean Tucker anytime (+425, Hard Rock), 6 of 17 with 11 goal-line carries and no yardage line. Under Ja'Marr Chase 25.5 longest reception (−120, Fliff), 10 of 16 against 28% deep completions allowed. Over Andrei Iosivas 9.5 receiving yards (−125, Fliff), 12 of 15, three books. Under Joe Burrow 6.5 rushing yards (−104, DraftKings), 6 of 8. Kenny Gainwell Over 3.5 receptions (+132, BetParx), 9 of 16 in Pittsburgh, new team. Baker Mayfield Over 0.5 interceptions (+105, ESPN Bet), 9 of 17. Under Mike Gesicki 20.5 receiving yards (−110, ESPN Bet), 8 of 12. Chase McLaughlin Over 7.5 kicking points (−110, Fliff), 10 of 17.

Darts: Tee Higgins alternate 99.5 yards (+390), 1 of 15, no; take Higgins 79.5 (+188), 3 of 15 at a 35% price, also no. Cade Otton alternate 49.5 yards (+325), 5 of 15. Emeka Egbuka Over 29.5 longest reception (+190), 8 of 17. Chase Brown first touchdown (check the price), 3 of the Bengals' first scores.

Fades: Ja'Marr Chase anytime (−120, 6 of 16). Chase Brown anytime (−125, 6 of 17, four of them in the last five games). Emeka Egbuka anytime (+190, 2 scores on 15 red-zone targets). Cade Otton anytime (+360, 1 of 15). Bucky Irving anytime (+160, zero goal-line carries). Iosivas and Gesicki anytime (13% and 17% scorers at 24%).

Passes: Burrow's yards (median). Chase's yards (median 95, line 86.5, receiver bar 49%). Chase's receptions (coin). Brown's rushing yards (coin into the fourth-best run defense). Irving's rushing yards (the yards over expected say no; the carries say yes; bet the carries). Godwin (comeback year). McMillan (four games). Higgins's yards (his yards come from the band Tampa leaks).

Game: Under 50.5, light. The highest total on the board, built on a six-game Burrow sample and a Tampa offense that lost its best receiver; both teams' openers last year landed on 43 and 33. The counter is the blitz-versus-Burrow matchup, which is why it is light. Bengals −3.5: no lean. A one-point game on a neutral field between these rosters is fair.

The stack: Higgins anytime + Otton Over 3.5 receptions + Brown Over 86.5. One story: Bowles blitzes, Burrow throws over it once and under it all day, and Otton catches five because Cincinnati's defense sends the ball to the tight end. Lotto: Higgins anytime + Tucker anytime + Burrow Over 2.5 touchdowns.

Part 9 · What to watch

Watch Tampa's first third-and-long. If Bowles sends six and leaves the safeties on the line, Higgins is one-on-one and the +132 is live. If Bowles rushes four and drops eight, Muhammad's signing meant a philosophy change and the Burrow touchdown Over is in trouble.

Watch who is on the field for Tampa inside the 5. If it is Tucker, the +425 is a real number and Irving's +160 is not. If it is Gainwell, the Steelers' role came with him and both Irving and Tucker are fades.

And watch Mayfield's first read on the first Bengals blitz that does not come. If he holds it 3.5 seconds looking for Egbuka, the interception Over is live. If he takes the Otton out, the completion Under gets tight and the Otton Over cashes early.

You will know all three inside the first quarter. That is more than most people at Paycor will know.

Tampa blitzes more than anyone and Cincinnati's quarterback is the best in football at punishing it. Cincinnati's defense sends every ball to the tight end and Tampa's tight end catches 73% of his targets. Which coach changes first: the one who has to stop sending five, or the one who has to stop throwing it to a rookie who catches half of them?
